A Grim and Gritty Horror Novel…

The Secret Life of Souls by Jack Ketchum and Lucky McKee

My thanks go out to Jessica Chase at Pegasus Book for my advance reading copy of this book…

At eleven years of age Delia Cross is already making her mark in the movies. Her mother seems to be a bit obsessed with the idea of managing Delia’s career, if not actually pushing the young girl into the spotlight in hopes the light might also reflect on her.

Mom is also popping pills and washing them down with scotch whiskey. Dad is something else, a man with too much time on his hands, a new car to keep him busy, and his own battle with gin. Delia’s twin brother Robbie resents her for her freedom from school and starts model after model without finishing them.

Then there is Caity. Caity is Delia’s pet Red Queensland Heeler, a dog with a soul all her own…

Everyone has their demons, and make no mistake, the Cross Family have their fair share. It is Caity that seems to be able to deal with them all. When Delia is almost crushed by falling pieces of the set of her latest gig, it is Caity who saves everyone.

The dog is there for everything: When Robbie’s pranks with Delia’s dollhouse get out of control and Delia’s face is burned badly, Caity is there to help out. With the family beginning to collapse, their house of cards built upon the back of Delia’s acting gigs toppling, Caity may be the only one who truly understands…
